Well, I don’t really know either. This little site here only started recently, I’m hosting the thing by myself (because I feel like it!), and in addition to the firewall I also have a few other tools running to secure my little server. The statistics about what unpleasant, unnecessary, and dangerous traffic the Internet is already sending my way are pretty astonishing.
Crawlers that blindly scour the Internet for broken WordPress installations, look for abandoned backups and .env files, etc., are probably the more harmless ones. What I find remarkable is just how much money is burned because of this – even if traffic is relatively cheap, it’s the sheer volume of all these different requests that surprises me.
Anyway, on firewall level, all of them get an automatic ban for a few hours, which increases by further hours if they show up again.
